2017 – India (The Founding Trip)

Kerala, Western Ghats, Chennai, Delhi, Agra, Rajasthan, Himalayan Foothills & West Bengal

During February and March 2017 we travelled from south to north India visiting various states. Although it wasn’t the easiest time of year to find reptiles, especially snakes due to the lack of rain we did manage to turn up a few species. Our success was greatly increased due to the help we received from friends who are involved with venomous snake bite research and rescues in West Bengal. Not only did they take us to some beautiful locations right along the northern border of India they also let us get involved with their day to day lives and introduced us to some amazing people who work with venomous snakes daily, some of whom were bite victims, now involved with the conservation of these wonderful reptiles.

One of these friends, is Vishal Santra. A few days after Ben first met Vishal, a couple of weeks after the creation of the C&FH journal, C&FH Expeditions was born. Why? Vishal has dedicated a significant amount of his life to understanding snakebite and building awareness around the topic. After seeing people working without any protective gear in fields which appeared to be full of russell’s viper (Daboia russelii), we decided we had to do something. By allowing people to join us in the field on our expeditions, we can raise funds to research snakebite, build awareness and tackle this occupational hazard! We can’t thank the people who have helped us enough, it’s been and still is an incredible and tough adventure, one which we hope will continue for many years to come…
