2018 Saw us back in West Bengal for a short visit to plan what would be the first expeditions we opened up to everyone, followed by a short flight to Hyderabad to attend a snakebite focussed conference. Mornings would, of course, be spent searching for snakes. This would be an even more successful trip when it came to Russell’s vipers (Daboia russelii) than our visit in 2017.
What became apparent during our time in West Bengal was how much easier it becomes to find snakes when you have a network of local people. Vishal Santra’s organisation, Simultala Conservationists has spent over a decade building up a strong relationships with the local community in and around Nalikul. When they have had an encounter with a snake, they will more often than not call one of the many trained members of Simultala Conservationists to come and remove or identify it. This has opened up an avenue to spread awareness and methods of keeping safe from snakebite.
During this trip we began a new photography project which for now, remains under wraps but will be released on this website upon completion.
